As a mother who has breastfed two children, I can confidently say that a binky or pacifier was an essential tool in my breastfeeding journey. While some may argue against the use of a binky, I believe it played a crucial role in helping me establish and maintain successful breastfeeding.
One of the main reasons a binky is necessary for breastfeeding is its ability to satisfy a baby’s innate need to suck. Newborns have a strong natural instinct to suck, and this can often lead to non-nutritive sucking at the breast, causing discomfort and even pain for the mother. A binky provides an alternative outlet for this sucking urge, allowing the mother’s nipples to rest and heal between feedings.
Moreover, using a binky can also help with nipple confusion in breastfed babies. Nipple confusion occurs when a baby has difficulty latching onto the breast after being introduced to artificial nipples, such as bottle nipples.
